About

November 13th, 1981.

On that date, a fledgling band called Loud Fast Rules played their first major gig, opening for local underground stars Hüsker Dü at the historic First Avenue in Minneapolis. Over the next few years, they would change their name to Soul Asylum, release a debut album, and take their first steps on the rocky road to becoming seasoned musicians.

27 years later, nothing has stayed the same. They have put their name on a Grammy Award and two platinum records, played venues that most bands would only ever dream of being admitted to, and spread their music to every corner of the world.

At the same time, they're still writing music, they're still performing, and they're still putting on some of the best live shows you're ever likely to see. In the end, it seems, some things never change.

EnterTheSoulAsylum.com is the web's premier resource and community for fans of Soul Asylum. We started up in October 2007, and there's no telling where we'll be in 2023.

Welcome to the asylum!

About the Site

EnterTheSoulAsylum.com is a fansite dedicated entirely to the American rock band Soul Asylum. We aim to be the most comprehensive, updated, and hospitable community for fans of Soul Asylum, old or new, and we will encourage discussion and activities related to the band wherever possible.

The site was launched on October 6th, 2007, exactly fifteen years since the release of Soul Asylum's double platinum-selling breakthrough album Grave Dancers Union.

About the Editors

Jakob Kallin, the webmaster of EnterTheSoulAsylum.com, is a 21-year-old student and an aspiring journalist something, who currently studies what he refers to as "computeristics" at the University of Gothenburg. He has been a passive fan of Soul Asylum ever since he first heard Runaway Train in the early '90s, and an active fan ever since he shook off his addiction to the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the summer of 2006 and decided to find out more about the band that recorded the most beautiful song ever. A half-Swede with Polish blood, he currently lives in a one-room apartment in Gothenburg but occasionally visits his family in the city of Jönköping, Sweden. When he's not listening to Soul Asylum, he enjoys good movies, semi-good movies, and philosophical discussions about any topic imaginable (including semi-good movies). On the forum, Jakob uses the pseudonym Homesick.

Jim Metz, the moderator and resident audio wizard of EnterTheSoulAsylum.com, is a 26-year-old student of geography from Northwest Suburban Chicago, Illinois. His love of Soul Asylum stems from his interest in "Weird Al" Yankovic, whose 1997 televison parody of Runaway Train led Jim to discover a new passion. (In fact, this was the focus of our first installment of Community Spotlight.) His prize achievements on the site include populating the discography database in less than a week and deciphering the lyrics to Soul Asylum's debut album Say What You Will, Clarence… Karl Sold the Truck, a task that few men (if any) have accomplished while still retaining their sanity. His interests apart from Soul Asylum, he describes it, are those of a "typical college kid": hanging out with friends, going out to the movies, audio (music)/video editing, and web surfing. Jim is also a co-administrator of the forum, where he is nicknamed Monolith Maniac.

The stylish textures that lend the site its picturesque visual profile are the work of William Reynish and John Susek.

Finally, none of this would be possible without the hard work of our favorite band, Soul Asylum, whose dedication over the past three decades has provided countless people from all over the world with tremendous joy. Thank you for everything!
