Soul Asylum covers CD?

Post by TravisSaves »

Has anybody recorded covers of any Soul Asylum songs?

I was just thinking it would be fun to do (for those who had the means to do so).

We can put together our very own Soul Asylum covers CD right here.

Does anyone else think this sounds like fun?

I doubt it. They are probably confused because Tom Petty released his own song called "Runaway Trains" on the "Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)" album in 1987, a few years before SA's song.

Here are some covers that I have gathered over the years, though the majority of them are of Runaway Train.

Official releases:

- Busted - Runaway Train (album: Uncovered)
- Smokie - Runaway Train (album: Busted)

* I find it odd that they both of these covers say "slow torch burnin'" (as opposed to blowtorch).

Other Runaway Train Covers (not official):

- Nick Saunders - Runaway Train (This one don't sound official, but there is a musician Nick Saunders. I didn't find any info on this song anywhere by him; this was just the title of it when I came across it on a P2P site long ago).

- JC Chasez (of 'NSync fame on the Mickey Mouse club singing it when he was a Mouseketeer.)

Other Soul Asylum Covers (not official):

Unknown - Promises Broken
Unknown - Closer To The Stars

I think these were downloaded from a P2P long ago as well.

There's a bunch of covers (mostly of Runaway Train) on YouTube. Some are quite good. If you find one in particluar that you like, I can convert it into an audio file for you.

The group Grand Champeen has played many Soul Asylum covers at their concerts (and even played a whole show with a whole setlist of SA songs).

Here's a recent clip of them when they performed with Two Cow Garage, The Drams, and Glossary:

The clip here was from the Chicago THIS IS AMERICAN MUSIC revue show with those bands. I wasn't at that show, but I was at the one the next night. I know there are quite a few people on this board who are fans of these bands, so I figured I'd make a note of some of this stuff.

The Drams are the reincarnation of Slobberbone, and all the members are fans of SA and the 80s minneapolis music scene in general (replacements, husker du, SA, Jayhawks, etc). Slobberbone has been known to regularly cover Cartoon (I have a couple copies of that lieing around somewhere).

The band Grand Champeen is another story. They are huge SA fans. Growing up the guys were all the "Soul Asylum" nerds. They were apparently in high school when Runaway Train hit it big (they were fans long before RT though), and at their MPLS SA covers show, they joked that the people in their school were like "thanks for the great tunes", as if they had anything to do with it. Their show in MPLS a few years back was great, it was their SA covers show, with only pre-GDU songs. It really felt like a Soul Asylum show, and they even managed to play James at 16 (in order no less). They're a great bunch of guys, and they are regularly compared to SA of the 80s. They're also noted for their 'mats influence.

I imagine if anyone puts something together, we could probably get grand champeen to contribute a song, and the Drams as well. It might be as simple as just a recording from a live concert if it's a bootleg DVD, but just figured I'd mention this, and give a bit of history to these bands.

That band Busted was an English band started by 2 friends that had auditions for a 3rd member and apparently the guy that got in the band was a big Soul Asylum fan and sung Runaway Train at his audition, so they later covered it, It was a B-side on the Single "Thunderbirds" which got to no 1 in the UK charts so I imagine Dave Pirner must have got a nice royalties cheque from it.

I've always found it strange about the slow torch burnin lyric

I think everyone misunderstood...

I think everyone misunderstood what I meant (sorry if I wasnt specific).

I meant that WE should record our own Soul Asylum covers and post it on the board for everyone to hear! Has anyone personally recorded any covers?

I thought it would be a fun thing to do if anyone else agreed.

I don't know if this idea is dead, but I'm working on recording Closer to the Stars.

Does anybody else have any interest in joining in on this idea? I think it would be fun if different forum members recorded their own versions of a Soul Asylum song and we can see if the owner of this site would post them up somewhere for all to here.

How does everyone feel about this idea?

I like the idea but I don't know if there are a lot of people on this forum that are able to do that. I'm a musician, but I'm not in a band at the moment, and seeing as I can't sing to save my life, I don't think I would have something worthwhile to contribute. Like mentioned before in this thread, a lot of people have clips up on YouTube, but they are mostly Runaway Train.

I don't know this fellow but this cover of I Did My Best isn't too bad:
