Concern over Tommy's GNR commitments

Has anyone heard anything about what Tommy's plans are with the emergence of this new Guns n Roses album? I am hoping that there won't be a GNR tour that will take him away from us! : ( Unless it's cancelled again, there is a March 5th SA show in my future and I want to see Tommy there. Sorry Guns n fans, but I selfishly want Tommy to stay with SA and record something and play some more shows. Maybe this is why there aren't more upcoming shows scheduled. Anyone have any insight or info?

Soul Asylum's tour schedule hasn't been especially...um...thick...since the 90's. It doesn't seem any sparser than usual really. I imagine if the commitment is there they'll work out a schedule.

Between GNR being ultra erratic as not only a rule but a law, and Soul Asylum live shows being scheduled pretty lightly, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the bass player.

All I keep thinking is "are we REALLY worried that GNR is even GOING to tour? Since the late 80's' I've had tickets to roughly half a dozen GNR shows. Not a single one of them ever actually happened.

I don't give them much credence as a functional band anymore.

Also, it's worth noting that George McKelvey was playing bass for the band before Tommy got back with them. Even if Tommy does become busy working with Guns 'n Roses, I'm pretty sure George would cover for him.

Last year around this time there weren't many other shows listed (besides the Holiday show at First Avenue and The Volunteers show at the Cabooze). It really wasn't until the beginning of last March (I believe) that Soul Asylum had announced their first shows of the year (with Blue October, all of which were unfortunately cancelled). The first show they actually played this year was in Utah on March 29th.

The majority of their shows last year were outdoor shows and may also be similar next year. If that is the case, I assume that dates will be announced early next year around the end of winter/beginning of spring.

Even if Tommy isn't performing, I think George still does a great job as a temporary replacement of a Replacement.

Tommy was in performance mode last night at the Grand Casino show. I wasn't expecting him to play at this show... seeing as Chinese Democracy is being released on Nov 23. It was pretty cool to see him here in Minnesota jammin with the rest of SA.

I did see them twice in 2007 with George and at the time I was just thrilled to be seeing them at all. The last time I'd seen them was with Karl, so for obvious reasons it was a little weird to see them for the first time with another bass player. However, when I saw them this summer with Tommy on board, it was an incredible experience and now I'm spoiled. Being a huge Replacements fan, I guess I'm spoiled now because I LOVE little Tommy and the whole band just seemed to have been breathed a new life having him there. They seemed like a real band again instead of having some guy sitting in. So I hope that can continue. And I love Michael too. In the words of Dan Murphy of Tommy and Michael: "the rhythm section's smokin'! They're hotter than a urinary tract infection." So Axel needs to keep his grubby hands off Tommy! : ) Run Tommy Run!

I agree. I love seeing Tommy play with the band (not as much as I loved seeing Karl play with them, but that's not really an option). Seeing Tommy with them you definitely get more of a feel of a full band playing together. He is one of the guys, and not just a replacement. The fact that he grew up around the rest of the guys makes such a big difference in that regard, you can tell they've known each other for a long long time. George plays great, and gets along with the guys, but he doesn't add the same spark tommy adds.

As far as Axel stealing tommy.... The only person I'd like to see steal Tommy away from Soul Asylum is Paul. He better steal Michael while he's at it though. God that would just kick so much ass....

I guess I could forgive Tommy if he got back together with Paul - but not at the jeopardy of getting to see him in Orlando this spring : ) Maybe Paul could tour around with Soul Asylum and Tommy could pop onstage with him too. That wouldn't be a bad line up. Maybe the Gear Daddies could open ...

I like George McKelvey a lot. I only saw SA twice and the KC show with George was better than the Tommy show in Des Moines. The difference was not in the bass playing though. It just all had a different feel to me. Plus nothing is better than the first time you fall in love.
