Todd posted this over on the jayhawks board, and I thought it was really awesome. Just some history about first ave, and the bands. A couple clips of SA too.

hey, that's an awesome promo/trailer!!

I saw that in the theater when it was "previewed". Pretty much a full house of nothing but "old schooler rock and rollers" in attendance, way cool!

I can't even imagine what else is out there for this kind of stuff. From the looks of it, many-a-show were video taped back in the days at the famed Entry/First Ave night clubs.

I'll second what mystic says and if they'd release this for sale, I'd buy it
(but for some reason, Rick Fuller doesn't want to do this......)

I'd imagine it would be a royal pain in the ass to get the licensing to release something like this... but it would really kick ass. There is so much incredible history at first ave/7th street, that it would be a shame to see so much of it hidden away. Looking through the video there are clips of the 'mats, husker du, soul asylum, the jayhawks, trip shakespeare, and other bands I didn't really recognize. On top of it there were so many other local and national bands that played there over the years, it's just incredible.

And of course... The stars. The stars are so awesome. I can't really think of any other club that does something like that.

On one of my recent trips to Minneapolis, they were screening "First Avenue Hay Day" the week after I was there. I guess it was the one-year anniversary of the first screening and only the second time the film had been shown. I was so disappointed to miss it. So close!

Meanwhile, I was happy to catch the Daniel Corrigan photo exhibit that they had this year at the Mill City Museum. There were only a couple of dozen framed photos displayed, but they had a video loop of thousands of other pics he took of local and national acts and it was great to see the old photos of Soul Asylum, the Replacements, and Husker Du, in particular. I couldn't possibly catch them all because the video took several hours to run through all of them, but he had spent so much time with SA that they were very well represented in the mix. The exhibit ran for quite a while, so that I actually popped in to see it on three separate Mpls trips, and each time I caught different photos.

bummer, you missed the screening by a week! Damn them for not checking with your schedule first in regards to when to debut this movie!! :)

I'll have to correct you though, that that was not the second time that movie was shown (to the public). That was the first time shown to open public.

A year earlier, the event called "Sound Unseen" had a similiar, but different video footage that was shown (first time to the public) in Oct 2005. These were both part of the Sound Unseen Film Fest series with different events going on for a week+ straight. This particular footage in 2005 contained bits and pieces of different First Ave/Entry shows from many different (local) bands. Along with that was a 20-30 minute segment that was just SA. This piece was labeled "Never Too Late, Never Too Soon". The stuff in 2006 was all completely different material.

So you're talking about different footage that was used in a 2005 screening. I realize the film shown in 2006/2007 is different from that. But my understanding is that the actual film "First Avenue Hay Day" had its premiere on August 16, 2006 - at the Riverview Theater, I believe. And then this past August 15, 2007, The Fine Line did a second screening of the film. I remember seeing it on the Fine Line's calendar when I was making plans for my August trip and I was so disappointed about the timing. The promotional material noted that it was the second time the film was being shown, almost a year to the date of its debut.

yeah, you're right. I didn't see any of the 2007 viewings. I remember seeing the Fine Line ads for this and thinking, why would I go to a bar and stand to watch a movie (especially one I had already seen) ??

There were also some movies shown at the Bryant Lake Bowl over the summer 2007. Every week on Tues (or whenever), they showed different First Ave/Entry video footage, all from the "old days", and more than likely all stemming from the Rick Fuller collection. Not sure "who" put this on, but going to guess it was part of DEMO. This went on for at least 4-5 weeks. Sadly, I didn't make it down there for any of them.......

WOW - that was really cool. I was at half of those shows - my first being Husker Du with Run Westy Run in 1987...
