Oh, Sandy....

Post by Educatrix »

Just sending a shout-out (Do the kids still say that?) to everyone who'll likely be affected by Hurricane Sandy. Here's hoping the lights won't be off for weeks and that the flooding isn't as bad as they're predicting.

Good luck!

(In case it wasn't obvious: I'm thinking we're gonna be without power in my vicinity by sometime tomorrow. On the plus side, I'm about a mile north of a mandatory evacuation line!).

Thanks. I am further inland than the Educatrix but made sure I got the batteries, water, and dry food just in case. With Irene last year I did lose power for a few hours.

It's really quite windy down here, but no rain as yet. Then again, it's only 9:00 PM local time. If the predictions hold, I may not be going to work on Tuesday, either.

How did you East Coasters make out (or are you still without power)?

It was way, way worse than I thought it'd be; that said, husband and I got out unscathed - we didn't even lose electricity. I've been off work all week - no schools on Long Island have been/will be open.

I'm just amazed that it was as bad as it was....

i was only out of power for 28 hours. i was really surprised we got ours back so quickly. the town next to us is mostly out of power, and our son's daycare only got power back this afternoon so will FINALLY be open tomorrow. (i spent a very frustrating day today trying to work from home with him... )
my area doesn't look that bad, but my town was 100% w/out power yesterday morning.

Glad y'all made out okay! As I said, hubs and I are incredibly lucky - we know many people who're on their fourth day without power, and at least a couple of couples we know are dealing with flood damage.

My in-laws haven't had power since Monday night, so we've had them over for hot showers & dinner a couple times and they'll be here tonight. A friend from work & his wife are coming as well (same situation), so it'll be a party!

I'd never seen anything like what I've seen in the past week. I was cavalier about the storm last weekend, but I could barely have misjudged it more.

My in-laws got electricity back late Friday evening. They were to sleep here, as it was to be cold that night. Several people we know have been staying with family and other friends.

Our car's been on "E" since Thursday night, but gas lines are so long that my husband took family with somewhat full tanks up on offers of rides to work. Luckily, my work's been closed since last Monday and will remain so through tomorrow, at least. We were hoping the lines would diminish by tonight - either way, he'll have to get on one.

A guy I know told me that a friend of his lost everything because of the storm; my brother-in-law's car is a loss due to flooding. A friend of ours who lives in a particularly hard-hit area said she saw a neighboring house burn to the ground.

Overall, it's just incredible. I'm thankful that our friends and family came out of this with our health and most possessions.

Educatrix, so glad to hear you and your family made it through safely. I’m so sorry for the people who are dealing with lost or damaged homes, and especially those who lost loved ones.

I was visiting family in FL when the storm hit and was unable to get back to New York, so I made my way to my place in New Orleans. I never thought I’d be going to New Orleans to escape a hurricane.

My thoughts are with all the people in NY and NJ who are still dealing with the impact of this monster storm.

Educatrix, I hope life gets back to normal for you soon.
